Venice is one of the most-visited cities on the planet. This city consists of more than 100 separate islands connected by more than 400 bridges over 150 canals. The countryside surrounding Venice is a treasure of its own and best explored by car.
History
Venice's first citizens migrated from the mainland after fleeing from the invading armies of Attila the Hun. The center and most frequented part of the city is Saint Mark's Square. At the eastern end are Saint Mark's Cathedral and the Doges' Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the two most important and imposing structures in Venice.
Recreation
The Grand Canal is approx 2 miles in length, and a boat ride on this canal is a requirement. Venice is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and a gondola ride is the only way to see it all. We would not recommend a swim through the canals.
